Taiwan - Roads
By the end of 2013, total length of Roadways in Taiwan is 42,520 kms. Roads are further divided into paved roads & unpaved roads. The length of total paved roads is 42,078 kms of which 1,348 kms of roads is of Highways and 737 kms of roads is of Expressways. The length of total unpaved roads is 442 kms.
Local roads in Taiwan are generally well maintained and driving conditions are good. The highways in western and northern Taiwan are also usually in good condition; in eastern Taiwan are sometimes in need of repair however. Road closures due to flooding are not uncommon during Typhoon season.
The 350 km distance drive between Kaohsiung and Taipei can be completed in 4-5 hours depending on traffic. Taiwanese highways are well serviced with rest stops, service stations and petrol stations. The speed limit in Taiwan depends on the individual highway but is between 80 km/h and 110km/h. Beware of speed cameras and speed traps on certain stretches.
All tolls are collected electronically by overhead gantries, not at traditional toll booths. Taiwan is the first country to switch from manual tolling to all electronic, multi-lane free flow tolling on all of its freeways. The odd numbered freeways have toll booths, where payment is collected by automatic electronic toll. Vehicles are charged $0.04/km up to 200km + NT$0.03/excess km.
The roads, which include three north-south routes with 22 toll points, carry out around 1.7 million transactions a day, generating some US$700 million of annual toll revenue.
Provincial Highway 12 :- It is a short East-West highway that connects Port of Taichung in Wuqi with downtown Taichung City. The entire highway is known as Taiwan Blvd. The total length is 23.2 kilometers.
Provincial Highway 26 :- is a Taiwanese highway that starts from Fangshan, Pingtung County and ends in Daren, Taitung County. The highway is also known as Ping-E Highway for the stretch between Fangshan and Cape Eluanbi in Kenting National Park, and Jia-E Highway between Cape Eluanbi and Jialeshui. It is the primary highway to Kenting National Park and the beaches in Kenting. The route length is 93.5 kilometres (58.1 mi).
